Unit 1: Observing Sun, Moon, & Stars (PLTW):
In first grade, students delve into space in a unit focused on patterns of the sun, moon, and stars. In this exciting design challenge, students first learn about the daytime and night sky in order to build the knowledge and skills they will need to help them solve a difficult task. Students must design, build, and test a structure that will protect children from the heat of the sun while they are playing in the middle of the afternoon. Stay tuned to find out if their first designs are enormous successes or fantastic failures and what they learned along the way!
Diagramming sun, moon, and EarthAfter observing the positions of the sun, Earth, and the moon, students created their own drawings to show why we can see the moon, even though it doesn't give off its own light!

Building Sun TrackersIn order to determine where the sun is, students built sun trackers and collected data on the position of the sun at different times of the day. Check it out below!
Searching for the StarsStudents used the StarChart App to discover the stars above us and then created their own constellations using flashlights and aluminum foil!

In first grade, students are focusing on learning how to type with accuracy and speed. They begin with lessons on the home row and advance through the course as they improve their skills. Students will also be reviewing mousing skills, and beginning to learn about the Google for Education products, along with some basic computer coding skills and internet safety.
